| THE WWF AND THE SEA |
|
| The WWF operates in defence of the marine environment in over 40 countries, campaigning for the creation and improved management of protected areas at sea, and for the limitation of over-exploitation of marine resources in favour of sustainable fishing. We should think more often of our planet not as Planet Earth but as Planet Ocean: after all, the sea covers 71% of the globe and offers 95% of the space available for different forms of life. Its estimated that the sea plays host to around 10 million different species
very different, since they range from giants like the Blue Whale to tiny creatures like the Seahorse! To defend the worlds oceans is to defend a priceless resource for humanity: 60% of mankind lives within 64 kilometres of the sea, and fish is the principal source of food for a billion people. Yet only half of one percent of the planets oceans is currently protected!
